Medicare Preventive Benefits Information

Providers in New Mexico can assist the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) achieve its mission of informing people with Medicare about the preventive benefits available to them. Medicare covers many important screenings and other benefits to help people with Medicare live healthier and more active lives, including:

  • One-time "Welcome to Medicare" physical (including an abdominal aortic aneurysm screening)
  • Cardiovascular screenings
  • Smoking cessation counseling
  • Cancer tests - mammogram for breast cancer screening, pap test and pelvic exam screenings for cervical and vaginal cancer, colorectal cancer screenings, and prostate cancer screening
  • Shots and vaccines - flu, pneumococcal, hepatitis B
  • Bone mass measurement
  • Diabetes screening, glucose monitoring supplies, and self-management training
  • Medical nutrition therapy for people with diabetes or kidney disease
  • Glaucoma test

CMS has developed a Quick Reference Information: Medicare Preventive Services chart that provides the codes for health care providers to use in billing for these services.

"A Healthier US Starts Here" initiative is an effort by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and CMS to join with local officials and partners to raise awareness about the importance of preventing chronic disease and illness, promote Medicare preventive benefits and provide information about how beneficiaries can take action to maintain and improve their health.

The Medicare Learning Network resources listed on this Web page give Medicare fee-for-service health care professionals information on coverage, billing, reimbursement and claim filing procedures for preventive services and screenings covered by Medicare (subject to certain eligibility and other limitations).

The HealthierUS initiative is a national effort to improve people's lives, prevent and reduce the costs of disease, and promote community health and wellness. The site encourages people to learn how to make physical activity a part of their day, eat healthy, protect themselves and their family from illness, and avoid risks to their health and the health of their loved ones.
